MADISON The police force, already strapped for officers, was dealt another blow Tuesday afternoon when veteran Detective James Daniels submitted his retirement.
We certainly will miss the detective. He was very capable, well-trained, and skilled in many types of (police work) like arson and computer crimes, acting Police Chief Robert Nolan said.
Daniels is the 10th cop to resign, retire or be fired since scandals began in the Police Department last spring.
Justin Stysly resigned just more than a week ago, after he completed academy training, but before he started full duty.
Nolan said he did not believe Daniels was the subject of any internal investigations.
Daniels was part of the team that investigated other cops throughout the scandal.
He could not immediately be reached for comment.
Daniels departure will take the towns staff down to 18 officers, excluding the chief. The department is authorized for a maximum of 25 officers, not including the chief. At least one officer, a lieutenant, is on leave due to injury.
Five officers have been fired amid separate accusations ranging from consorting with prostitutes and theft to failure to supervise, threatening and workers compensation fraud.
Another officer retired over the winter amid an investigation into his conduct. Two other officers retired about the same time, although one continues to work part-time.
Two resigned this summer for reasons unrelated to the investigations.
