To the editor:

There are no such things as problems, just opportunities to explore. We, the people who live and/or work in Stamford, have an opportunity before us. We now have two all-volunteer fire departments - Turn of River and Belltown.

Our opportunity is to help these two fire departments not only survive, but thrive. I, myself, cannot be a volunteer firefighter. There are, however, things I can do to be useful to them. The fact that Mayor Malloy has slashed their budgets to $40,000 and $20,000, respectively, tells me one of their immediate needs is money. They both have Web sites (www.trfd.com and www.belltownfire.com) to explore. The individuals involved in these organizations are all volunteers, willing and well-trained to help us at times when no one else can.

I recently attended the Belltown Volunteer Fire Department Block Party. I did that because I know they are now all volunteer and need all the support our community can offer. For those who didn't make it there that day, it was great. These people know how to party. There were no rowdy, drunken or obnoxious individuals - just lots of people having good, clean fun. There was live music, delicious food, games, fire truck rides, etc. Young people appear to be very involved with the goings on at their fire house. That, to me, is a very good sign.

While I was enjoying myself, volunteers responded to a call for help. The volunteers grabbed their gear and headed out. Responding to calls for help is their first priority, no matter what else is going on.

Can we make helping Turn of River and Belltown Volunteer Fire Departments a priority? I can and will! This is an opportunity to explore that I will definitely commit to.

Needs Help Rockfall, CT 13 hrs ago   If anyone needs help it's Sue Orawsky! She takes pictures of firefighters, then makes things like placemats and coffee cups with the pictures on it and sells them for a profit without getting permission from anyone to use their photos. This woman was basically stalking one of the past Career Fire Fighters at the Turn of River FD. This guys is married and she was sending him cards all the time with things like "thinking of you written" inside. Yes people should help out their community, but they should do so because they want to. Not when someone tells them to.
