BRIDGEPORT — An elderly city woman, who died after the car her daughter was driving hit a fire truck died last year, filed suit today against the city and the fire truck driver.

The family of 77-year-old Essie Williams claims in the suit, filed in Superior Court, the Platt Street woman's death eight months after the crash was caused by negligence of the fire truck driver, David Otero, and the city.

The crash also killed Williams' daughter, Gwendolyn Little, 58, of Willow Street, who was driving the car.

The suit seeks in excess of $15,000 in damages.

Capt. Luis Rivera, a Fire Department spokesman, would not comment on the lawsuit.

Last July 31, the fire truck, its siren and emergency lights activated, had just left the Congress Street headquarters when it struck a 1977 Dodge sedan driven by Little, which was headed south on Housatonic Avenue, a short distance from Fire Department headquarters.

Little was died that day in the crash, while her mother, who was in the front passenger seat, was hospitalized with numerous injuries.

Williams died from her injuries on March 24, the suit states.

Deputy Fire Chief Robert Petrucelli previously said the truck had been dispatched to investigate a report of a smoky condition when the car pulled out in front of the vehicle, leaving no time for Otero to hit the brakes. The fire truck hit the driver's side of Little's car and pushed it 30 feet.

Otero and the other firefighters on the truck have since returned to work.

The lawsuit claims Otero was inattentive and failed to keep a reasonable lookout and was driving at an unreasonable speed.

Another CT Post award-winning report: please explain how an elderly woman who died filed suit today against the city? Also did the fire truck die? Looks like that from the quote.

1 I hope for once the City of Bridgeport grows some B*^^s, and fights this nuisance lawsuit.According to the accident investigation, negligence did not exist on the part of the firefighter operating the truck. End of story!!!.The City does not have two nickels to rub together let alone hand over $15,000.00 for a case that does not exist. Do the right thing Bridgeport!

1 Mayor Finch, GROW A PAIR! Sue the woman for the damage to the fire truck and the injuries to the firefighters. Also sue for the time that the Police wasted on the investigation. I bet she had the radio on or windows up and air conditioner on. The hore killed her mother and now looking for a scape goat out of the City. Please pick me for jury duty on this trial.

Yes the Bridgeport Post needs to send their reporters back to elementary school and learn the basics. Especially the Sport Department. Boston comes alphabetically before New York. Mets and Red Sox come alphabetically before Yankees.

How dare you call my friends mother out of her name...You hateful pieace of crap!

1 How about when sirens are going you slow down to see where it's coming from, especially at an intersection. If I hear sirens I make sure I know where they are coming from and if I need to take any action LIKE STOPPING AND STAYING OR GETTING OUT OF THE WAY.

I am sorry they lost their lives but this law suit needs to be tossed. Ive seen how people drive not only in CT but other states in this country and many people dont give a damn about traffic laws or even respecting emergency vehicles.

Explain something to me, how fast was he going if he just pulled out of the station? A truck that size does not go 0-60 in 10 seconds like some cars. She tried to beat the light by turning left in front of him. If they were white you know there would be no law suit allowed. You are the racist pig. Go back to Ansonia and march with the NAACP for the cop that stole city property. How many white cops does Al The Racist Sharpton and the NAACP march in support for? The real racists are the NAACP. One last thing...How DARE you fail to grant the right of way to an emergency vehicle. If you had a fire or medical call at your house and a white driver impeaded the flow of the emergency vehicle and it caused a delay in the respond, you would be the first one screaming racism. Get a life.

TO "YOU RACIST PIGS", grab a glove and get in the game . This has NOTHING to do with race. Stop making excuses and face up to the facts for once in your life. She was wrong, end of story! There were multible witnesses to this accident of various races and they ALL told the same story. She went through the red light and failed to grant the right of way to an emergency vehicle. Get your facts straight and stop playing the card!

1 SO she did not hear the siren???? or see the lights?? I am not sure exactully what happen, but unless there was a red light envoled that the firetruck driver has to stop at. She was at fault for not giving the right away to a emergency vechile.

SO go get a job and stop trying to take money the lazy way.

1 If the truck just pulled out of the station, made a right turn onto Congress Street and then crossed Housatanic Avenue, then how fast could it be going? A fire engine does not go zero to 60 MPH in 10 seconds.

1 I worked at Bridgeport Fire Headquarters for almost 30 years. When apparatus pulls out of the firehouse the siren is wailing, the horn is blowing, and the lights are flashing. Exiting Congress Street side they have a good 150 feet before they make a turn onto Housatonic Ave. Exiting from the rear of the firehouse they have at least that much distance before turning either way onto Housatonic Ave. If they aren't seen or heard it is because someone isn't paying attention.

1 So let me understand this...A black woman drives her car into the path of a red fire truck driven by a white fire fighter. And now her Estate has the nerve to make the tax payers pay for her poor driving? I am sure she is being representated by Johnny Cockerham's law firm. Sure sounds like it's racially motivated. Is the NAACP going to support the criminal like they are doing with the Ansonia police officer that stole city property?

1 The nerve of these money hungry family members!!! The woman was obviously not paying attention or respecting the law of giving the right away to emergency personal. For the taxpayers to have to pay for someones negligance is pathetic. What dumb **** is representing this case?? The firefighters involved my sympathies to you guys for having to deal with this disturbing incident. You guys are heros and never forget that. You put your life on the line everyday. Godbless you and keep your head high!!!!!!!

I totally agree with you. Next time the firefighters have to go out on a call, they should stop at a sign first then a light if knuckle head drivers decide they need to go first. HELLO!!! emergency vehicle coming through you need to STOP. I hope her family did not pick up her bad habit of cutting firetrucks off.

Holy cow!!! The heroes that take care of us and put their life on the line are being suid because someone did not respect the law or had respect for emergency personal? This put the icing on the cake. Good bye
