MADISON -- Ernest Boggs Jr. made his first appearance before a judge Wednesday morning.
Boggs, an officer for the Madison Police Department, was arrested by that agency in early July for having a vehicle with unregistered plates, officials said.
Officials said he bought a truck in Guilford from a woman last year.
The woman said that when Boggs purchased the truck, she let him borrow her license plates. She said he told her he would get the vehicle registered in his name.
But this summer, she said she realized that he never registered the truck on his own.
Boggs is the latest officer with the Madison Police Department to come under fire, officials said.
Boggs' attorney said he tried to register the truck but had some property-tax issues.
The attorney said Boggs has since corrected the issue and that he's sorry for any problems he created.
Boggs now faces criminal charges: driving an unregistered vehicle, misuse of a license plate and theft of a license plate, officials said.
