NORTH HAVEN — Police received a tip, and then a big surprise, when they answered a burglary call Thursday afternoon.

They took away more than 100 marijuana plants and growing equipment from a single-family home at 18 Oakwood Drive. Sources said the home is owned by retired New Haven firefighter David Lee.

Capt. James Merrithew said an anonymous caller reported a burglary in progress at 2 p.m., and when police arrived, they saw the front door had been kicked in.

“As they were searching the house and securing it, they found a large amount of marijuana plants in one of the bedrooms,” Merrithew said.

A search warrant was applied for and police returned to the home at 7 p.m.

Police removed the plants, “an elaborate lighting system, heat and grow lamps and a hydroponic system for seedlings,” Merrithew said.

Some loose marijuana was also found.

The marijuana’s value is yet to be determined, but Thursday’s raid resulted in the largest marijuana seizure in about two years, he said.

Merrithew said that police had received reports from neighbors about “unusual traffic and activity at the home for some time. Other investigations never led to a search.”

Merrithew would not release the name of the homeowner. Police could not locate the home-owner after the burglary or during the search, Merrithew said.

The homeowner will be charged with cultivation and possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

Merrithew said police know who the burglary suspects are, but had not located them as of late Thursday.

Meanwhile, New Haven police arrested Lee Wednesday night in connection with a domestic situation, and confirmed they are looking at him in connection with a motor vehicle accident.
