MADISON Another police officer will face unspecified administrative charges this morning. The charges against Officer Daniel Hedges stem from an internal affairs investigation. He is scheduled to appear before the Police Commission today, according to a revised commission agenda released late Monday afternoon. Police Chief Paul Jakubson said he would not comment on the details of the charges or about the level of discipline he recommended Hedges face until the charges are read into the record at this mornings hearing, which begins at 9:30 at police headquarters. Hedges is the fifth officer brought up on department charges in recent months. Four of the officers worked midnight shifts, when much of the alleged misconduct took place. Hedges worked the day shift, said Michael Brady, regional counsel for the International Brotherhood of Police Officers. Hedges charges are unrelated to the charges against the other officers, Brady said. Earlier this month, Sgt. Trent Fox testified that former Officer Bernard Durgin Jr. and three unnamed officers had met with prostitutes during their shifts at various spots throughout town. Hedges is not one of those officers, Brady said. Todays hearing is also to consider the case of Officer Matthew Sterling, suspended Jan. 18 for a variety of alleged violations including allegedly paying for sex at a known house of prostitution. His charges were introduced at a hearing scheduled for the cases of former Sgt. Timothy Heiden and Durgin. The commission last week voted to fire Heiden, brought up on administrative charges of interfering in a state police investigation and failure to supervise, and Durgin, who faced 50 administrative charges ranging from consorting with prostitutes to workers compensation fraud. Three officers have been fired from the department in recent months. In addition to Heiden and Durgin, former Officer Joseph Gamberdella was dismissed in May after allegedly committing thefts at two Madison businesses. Gambardella and Durgin also face criminal charges. Each has been arrested three times in recent months. William Clendenen Jr., the Police Department attorney, has said every officer who worked on the midnight shift has been fired, resigned, or is the subject of an internal affairs investigation. Officials have said more charges, both criminal and administrative, could lie ahead. Sterlings hearing is expected to be conducted in closed session. Brady said he wasnt sure whether Hedges hearing would be public. Amanda Pinto can be reached at apinto@nhregister.com or 789-5734. |
