STRATFORD — A Hazelwood Terrace home suffered extensive fire damage Friday afternoon. When firefighters arrived at the two-story, colonial-style house at 100 Hazelwood Terrace, heavy smoke was pouring from the attached garage, according to fire officials. Deputy Fire Chief Michael Hostetter said the garage was packed with wares that caused the fire to escalate. He said a resident of the home was working on the furnace in an area adjoining the garage when the fire broke out. He said the man, whose identity was not released, apparently attempted to put the fire out himself. "At this point we believe that whatever work he was doing on the furnace may have caused the fire, but it's still under investigation," Hostetter said. The man also suffered minor smoke inhalation, but refused to be taken to the hospital, the deputy chief said. There were no other injuries. According to town tax records, the owner of the home is Wanda Bajda. Firefighters managed to confine most of the fire damage to the single-story garage, but the chief said the rest of the structure did have smoke damage. He estimated the total damage from the fire at between $40,000 and $50,000. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes.
