BRIDGEPORT — One hundred thirty members of the city's Firefighter Union have approved a five-year contract proposal from the city, after the last contract expired three years ago.

The 130-10 vote was cast over last Wednesday and Thursday, said Firefighter Robert Whitbread, president of the Bridgeport Fire Fighters Union Local 834. There are about 300 city firefighters, some of whom are not 834 members, according to the union.

The proposed agreement was referred to the Contracts Committee of the City Council at the council's meeting Tuesday night.

"We've gotten some more money. The city got some things they wanted," Whitbread said. The proposal runs retroactively from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2009, he said.

While he did not know if three years without a contract was a record, he said, "it's a long time."

More specific terms of the tentative agreement were unavailable late Tuesday.

In November 2006, the union rejected 177-1 a city proposal that would have increased co-pays and health insurance premiums while giving 2 and 3 percent annual raises.

The four-year proposal would have given retroactive raises of 2 percent for 2004 and 2005, and 3 percent for July 2006, with an additional 3 percent in 2007.
