The state Labor Department's Division of Occupational  Safety and Health has cited the Stonington Borough Fire Department for improper training and use of air packs. The violations must be corrected by Oct. 1 and the fire department has been fined $300.

OSHA inspected the department July 12 following a complaint from a department member. The inspection came just eights days after The Day published a photo of several borough firefighters on the roof of a Shawondassee Drive house trying to extinguish a fire without wearing air packs.

Borough Warden  Donald Maranell said the department is addressing all the issues raised by OSHA and is purchasing new air packs.
