New London -- One of three bikes parked on the carriage floor of New London Fire Department headquarters was stolen this morning by a man who claimed he was "just borrowing it for a little while," according to fire officials.

The bikes were scheduled to be used for an emergency medical technician training session this morning and are often used during large events like Sailfest, according to Lt. Thomas Chilleri.

Chilleri said a woman on the street who had been walking near the fire station, came inside to tell firefighters that a man had mistaken her as a member of the department.

"She said he told her, 'Just tell them I'm just borrowing it for a little while to do community service at L&M (Hospital),'" Chilleri said. "...He just walked in, hopped on a bike and left."

Battalion Chief Henry Kydd hopped in a car and followed the alleged bicycle thief through a few sides streets and back onto Bank Street, where New London Police Department Officer Patricia Tidd headed the man off from the other direction.

The man was arrested this morning and the bicycle has been returned for today's training. The man was still being booked at the police station and his name and charges were not yet available.
