Maintenance of fire trucks under scrutiny

WATERBURY -- The bureau that oversees the maintenance of the Fire Department fleet is under intense scrutiny in the investigation into the May 19 accident that killed Capt. John Keane.

The investigative report, prepared by Police Superintendent Neil O'Leary, found that mechanical failure was not the cause of the collision between Engine 12 and Truck 1, but that the Bureau of Automotive Repair's practices and record keeping were insufficient.

Engine 12, in which Capt. John Keane and driver Joseph Fischetti were traveling, was found to have faulty brakes on two wheels and was not roadworthy under state standards.

O'Leary's report recommends that the bureau be folded into the Department of Public works or have its functions outsourced on the basis of his investigation.

Fire Chief Michael Maglione said the department already has taken steps to modernize and improve operations in the bureau.

It was faulty maintenance by the bureau that lead to the deaths of two firefighters in a 1990 accident on Highland Avenue.
