BRIDGEPORT — A firefighter escaped serious injury Saturday afternoon after the roof of a burning building he was standing on collapsed. The firefighter, who was not identified, dropped into the burning building at 563 Stillman St., but was quickly rescued after a ladder was placed into a nearby window. The six families living inside the Victorian-style building also escaped. Two female residents, however, were taken to Bridgeport Hospital for smoke inhalation.

Rosa Cifredo of Reservoir Avenue said her cousin, Elizabeth Pagan, and Pagan's daughter, Lidianis Morales, 15, who is seven-months pregnant, were rushed to the hospital after feeling faint.

"They lived on the third floor and lost everything," Cifredo said. Additionally, she said a cousin, Anna Pagan, and her 14-year-old daughter, Yiranne, who just arrived from Puerto Rico on Friday for a two-week visit, also lost everything.

Speaking in Spanish through Cifredo, Anna Pagan said she will have to go home now. "I have nothing here now," she said.

The fire that erupted before 5 p.m., appears to have destroyed the structure. One of two ornate cupolas on the building also collapsed into the flames. It is uncertain what caused the fire. Thick black smoke rose over neighborhood as firefighters rushed to the scene, located off East Main Street. Police blocked off access to the area near Stillman and Orchard streets.
