| When a
security light lit up in his yard an hour after midnight
Monday, off-duty New Haven police officer Eric Scott
thought he might have an intruder on his hands. On his
way to the hospital a short while later, Scott was
probably wishing that was the case after having
accidentally shot his daughter, who he mistook for a
burglar hiding in his basement.
Police said his daughter, Tasha Scott, 18, was trying to
get back into the house without waking her parents up
after being out with friends.
Her father, armed with his service pistol and a
flashlight apparently checked out the backyard before
checking the basement.
Police said he checked the basement because he noticed
the door was open, when previously it was closed. When he
went inside, he noticed a shadow moving in the basement's
bathroom, so he fired, hitting his daughter in the right
knee. Due to her position, police said, the bullet struck
her knee and traveled up her leg.
According to doctors at Bridgeport Hospital, her injury
was not life threatening.
According to Capt. Chris Marino, police department
spokesman, Eric Scott most likely faces at least three
investigations in relation to the shooting; one from the
Stratford Police Department, one from the New Haven
Police Department and a state investigation. He said that
after the police department is done investigating the
shooting, their findings will be turned over to State
Attorney Jonathan Benedict's Bridgeport office for
review.
Marino said as of presstime Tuesday it's not likely that
Scott is going to be charged with anything by the
Stratford Police.
"It looks like an accidental shooting," said
Marino.
