| In April 1973, I had the honor to be hired as a part-time officer for the town of East Lyme. In November of that year, the town hired three additional full-time officers. I was hired for one of those positions. We made good with the old Hall of Records building holding cell, offices and such. We were told it was a matter of time before we would be in a better facility to meet our needs. In 1985, I left for the benefit of my family. Around 1980, Niantic Fire Chief Fred Johnson had begun looking at building plans for a 911 Emergency Operations Center, but eventually had to settle for the old Flanders Fire Department. Now, 26 years later, it still is in operation, but lacking space for all its needs. The town has seen officers and dispatchers come and go. A formal committee stated that the town should let those employees leave, if they want, to seek better pay and promotions, and that they would make good candidates for supervisory positions if they wanted to return. Some did return to serve on boards and commissions for the town, but most did not return for employment. Conditions have not changed. East Lyme is fortunate to have many dedicated officers, dispatchers and emergency services personnel who continue to work in cramped, out-of-date facilities. One building serving the needs of several town agencies is a smart move. Planning for expansion is a wise move. I've seen 34 years of talk. I'd like to see one day of positive town action. I urge all to vote yes for the new public safety complex. Change is inevitable, progress is optional. Stephen RebelowskiEast Lyme |
