Who's who on the Democratic Town Committee
Bridgeport's Town Committee has 90 members, excluding one seat left vacant after the arrest of Shawn Fardy on drug charges. Of those, 71 members - nearly four-fifths of the total - work for the city, are retired from a municipal job, have a close relative who works for the city, or serve as elected or appointed members of influential public boards.
Town committees, whether Republican or Democratic, are assembled by volunteers who live in a district and agree to serve on a slate of nine committee members. If there is a challenge by a competeing slate, an election is held in the spring of even-numbered years. The last town committee election in Bridgeport was March of this year, when two slates competed. The next opportunity to challenge a slate will be in two years. Although there are nearly 14,000 registered Democrats in the city, generally only 12 percent or so turnout for DTC elections.
