Harrel set to join Darien Police Commission

Former First Selectman Bob Harrel is expected to replace Doug Campbell, who’s resigned, on the Police Commission as early as next week.

The Republican Town Committee this month nominated Harrel and First Selectman Evonne Klein, a Democrat, has endorsed him.

“I think Bob will be a great addition to the Police Commission,” Klein told The Darien Times on Wednesday. “He certainly has the knowledge and experience for the commission.”

Speaking of the outgoing Campbell, said Klein: “Doug was a dedicated commissioner and provided leadership as chairman. He set a positive tone for the Police Commission and was really in tune with the community.”

Campbell’s term is to expire on June 30. At that time Harrel would have to be renominated.

“Doug Campbell has served on the Police Commission for a long time in a very exemplary manner,” Jack Orchulli, RTC chairman, told The Darien Times on Monday. “We are very pleased that we were able to find someone of Bob Harrel’s stature to fill the position. He has a great knowledge of the town and the police department.”

Harrel, who has lived in town for more than 50 years, served as first selectman from 1997 to 2003. He is also on the Darien Nature Center’s board of directors and is on the Darien Rowayton Bank’s board of directors.

The selectmen are expected to interview Harrel in executive session on Monday and possibly vote later that evening.
