(New Haven-WTNH) A Madison police officer accused of breaking the law says he didn't do it - he is accused of stealing nearly $1,000 worth of seafood from a Madison restaurant.

Security cameras in the restaurant led to the arrest of officer Joseph Gambardella, but his lawyer says he'll plead not guilty.

Officer Gambardella appeared in court today with his wife who is expecting. He was calm, cool and collective. He was even seen laughing  at a time when his reputation and that of his department is on the line.

It's a fish tale like no other; a veteran Madison police officer allegedly sacks away pounds and pounds of lobster and shrimp meat while on duty. Not once, but twice - all of it allegedly caught on tape.

Today, officer Joseph Gambardella didn't offer up an explanation, but his lawyer kiddingly brushed the charges aside.

"Lobster theft is everywhere, we're on the shoreline, there are lobster pots everywhere."

Gambardella with his pregnant wife at his side listened intently as attorney Hugh Keefe answered questions as to whether the surveillance tape from Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale restaurant was damaging.

"On its face it seems damaging, but when I have a chance to review it I'll let you know," says Keefe.

State police and Madison police were alerted to the alleged crime after the owner of the seafood restaurant brought them the video tape.

Court documents say in August and October of this past year Gambardella told his dispatcher he noticed an open door at the restaurant and needed to check it out. Instead authorities say the veteran officer, who earns a six figure salary, helped himself.

"He will enter a 'not guilty' plea and elect a jury trial."

Gambardella's attorney says he just got charges against a Hartford police officer dropped after a video tape in that case was not all it was cracked up to be.

Gambardella will be back before a judge later this month. He remains on paid leave.
