MILFORD — At least two of the five police officers given suspensions for violating department policies in connection with a prisoner's death may file grievances, a union official said Thursday.

"Two of the officers are potentially pursuing grievances for the discipline that was imposed," said Sgt. Jeff Matchett, president of the Milford Police Union Local 899. "The other three officers have yet to approach me about a grievance."

The deadline for filing a grievance for the one-day suspensions is today, Matchett said, though the grievances won't be official until they're received by the Board of Police Commissioners at its meeting Monday night.

Matchett declined to identify the two officers who could file grievances until the filings are official.

"The discipline being imposed was the result of the high-profile nature of the case," Matchett said. "I don't believe they fit the alleged policy violations."

The suspensions of five police officers were announced last week when the Police Department released the results of its internal investigation into the death of Nicholas Brown, 24, of Stratford. Brown died in custody Oct. 19, about five hours after being shot three times with a stun gun in the Rowe Avenue parking lot of the Red Roof Inn. Officials with the Chief State Medical Examiner's Office said the cause of death was cocaine toxicity.

"Because of the seriousness of this incident, we took a critical look at each officer who played a role in this matter and we have held these officers to a strict interpretation of our policies," Police Chief Keith Mello said when the report was released.

The suspended officers include Sgt. Kenneth Walewski, who officials said waited more than 45 minutes before calling paramedics after learning Brown was hallucinating, Officer Jeffrey Cortes, Officer John Kranyak, Lt. Victor Daniels and Lt. Joseph Pietrafesa. Ken Fellenbaum, chairman of the Board of Police Commissioners, said the discipline imposed on the officers will be discussed in executive session when the board meets at 7 p.m. Monday at Police Department headquarters, 430 Boston Post Road.
