| BRIDGEPORT Two firefighters were injured and four adults left homeless when fire raced up a wall in a balloon-frame home in the city's Hollow section late Tuesday, causing $100,000 in damage. The residents' names were not immediately available, said provisional Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Elander. One of them received minor burns when he tried to put out the fire with a garden hose before calling 911, he said. Firefighter Robert Grimes was listed in satisfactory condition at St. Vincent's Medical Center Wednesday, suffering from a heat-related illness following the fire, Elander and hospital officials said. Firefighter Edward Voccola was burned on his neck and hand when embers got inside his jacket, the assistant chief said. The fire started about 9:30 p.m. in the basement of a single-family home at 119 Jones Ave., when food left on a stove ignited, according to Elander. The fire entered a hollow wall of the balloon-frame home and damaged the first and second floors and attic, Elander said. Firefighters had it under control shortly after 10 p.m., he said. All four residents found housing on their own, the assistant chief said. Aaron Leo, who covers regional issues, can be reached at 330-6222. |
