Westport Fire Department officials are seeking a few brave people and plan to diversify the department along the way.

Starting Wednesday, those interested in joining the department can apply to take the test. Applications will be available in the personnel office in Town Hall Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Aug. 17.

Department officials are seeking five new recruits to fill vacancies that will be created due to promotions.

Fire Chief Christopher Ackley said he is also working with TEAM Westport to diversify the department.

Packets of information will be sent to a variety of groups encouraging people to take the test, he said.

“This is something (former First Selectwoman Diane Farrell) wanted to do, but we needed to do a test in order to do it,” he said.

Department officials during that time crafted plans to diversify the department, he said, but they wanted to do it right.

“I think we’re on the right path with our plans,” he said.

Those applying do not need previous fire experience, but certain certifications need to be in place first.

The people hired would receive a starting salary of $42,593 per year with full benefits including uniform allowance, paid vacation after one year of service, pension and 401K.
