About the Police Academy
- The New Haven Police Academy is located at 710 Sherman Parkway in New Haven. Its program and faculty are fully certified by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training (POST) Council. New recruits attend the academy for approximately six months. Proficiency in a wide variety of subject areas is required, with 80% being the minimum passing grade. The academy training includes a broad range of instruction and preparation for a career in police service, including but not limited to constitutional law, writing and reading police reports, ethics, bias and hate crimes, diversity training, conflict resolution, preventing sexual harassment, management of aggressive behavior, domestic violence, responding to people with mental illness, child development, juvenile law, crime prevention, defensive driver training, police liability, police community relations, firearms safety, use of force and mechanics of arrest and many other topics.
- Physical agility and chain of command are also taught and monitored regularly.
- Department policies and procedures, independent study, community field placements, and term projects are also part of the required curriculum.
- Rigorous personal and ethical standards are upheld and the ethical, emotional and suitability standards of all students are routinely monitored and evaluated by academy staff.
- Report cards are issued regularly.
Field Training Officer Program - Upon successful completion of the academy, graduates continue the probationary process in the department's Field Training Officer (FTO) Program for approximately 16 weeks. Probationary officers are matched with a series of experienced FTO's in a structured teaching and mentoring on-the-job evaluation program.

About the Fire Academy
- The New Haven Fire Academy is located at 230 Ella Grasso Boulevard. It is operated by the Fire Department and staffed with training officers who are certified by the State of Connecticut Commission on Fire Prevention and Control as well as the State Department of Public Health Office of Emergency Medical Services. New recruits attend the academy for approximately twenty weeks. Proficiency in a wide variety of subject areas is required, with 70% being the minimum passing grade. The academy training includes a broad range of instruction and preparation for a career in the fire service, including but not limited to Department Standard Operating Guidelines, diversity and sexual harassment training, fire service orientation, safety, personal protective equipment, building construction, rescue, fire control, hazardous materials awareness and operations, awareness to terrorism, basic life support, medical and trauma care, critical incident stress debriefing, assisting with advanced life support, and many other topics. Courses of instruction enable new recruits to obtain state certification as a Firefighter I, II and EMT-Basic, which probationary firefighters are required to obtain within 24 months of hire.
- Proficiency in physical agility and discipline are also taught and evaluated regularly.
- Community-focused and term projects are part of the required curriculum.
- After graduation from the Fire Academy, Pro-bationary Firefighters are assigned to Engine and Truck Companies and work under the direct supervision of a fire officer.
- Ongoing education is expected of all New Haven Firefighters.
