| Bridgeport house uninhabitable after fire |
| BRIDGEPORT - A fire that raced through the second floor of a duplex on Jackson Avenue early Saturday left two families homeless and caused about $50,000 damage. No one was injured in the 5:54 a.m. blaze, which started when a woman on the second floor left food unattended on a stove, said Battalion One Chief William Haug. The tenant, whose identity was not available from firefighters, had walked downstairs to speak with relatives and, when she returned to the second floor, found the kitchen on fire, Haug said. The fire heavily damaged four rooms on the second floor at 152-154 Jackson Ave. and burned through the attic and roof. The first floor had water damage, Haug said. "We had heavy fire out several windows on arrival," Haug said. "All the contents were lost, and there was significant structural damage done." All of the occupants had left before firefighters arrived. The house is not habitable due to fire damage on the second floor, water damage on the first floor and utilities being disconnected. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in about 20 minutes. "Knockdown was pretty quick," Haug said. Five engine companies, two ladder companies and a rescue company responded. |
