Golas Promoted to Deputy Chief

By Jennifer Connic

The Westport Police Department dipped into its bench today when it promoted Gary Golas to the position of deputy chief.

Golas had been a lieutenant overseeing the Detective Bureau. He fills the spot left by David Heinmiller, who recently retired.

First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said the department has a “strong bench” with people, like Golas, that go above and beyond the call and grow into their roles.

Golas said he remembers when Police Chief Al Fiore was appointed to his position and he said he wanted people to enjoy coming to work

“Sometimes we make our own lives too complicated,” he said. “If you enjoy coming to work you will do your job to the best of your ability. That’s all you can as of someone.”

In order to do that, Golas said, people have to be treated with respect.

At the end of a discussion, he said, you both may not agree, but they will walk away feeling they are appreciated.

Fiore said Golas has been an excellent officer that is a “leader of men and women.”

“You can judge that by looking at the number of officers here today,” he said.
