BRIDGEPORT — Javis Holliday lost his daughter and granddaughter in a fire last month. This week, the same fire claimed his life.

Holliday, 59, who was rescued by police from the blaze in the multifamily home on Ridge Avenue, died from his injuries in the burn center at Bridgeport Hospital Sunday morning.

On April 4, his 28-year-old daughter, Ramona Holliday, and her 1-year-old daughter, Trisha, were laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery.

Ramona Holliday and her daughter were killed when fire swept through their apartment in the city's South End on March 29.

Javis Holliday, who was disabled and in ill health, was rescued from the flames by Police Officer Barry Jones. But Jones could not reach the other family members.

The cause of the fire, which erupted in Javis Holliday's bedroom, is under investigation. Police said there were no smoke detectors in the apartment. Jose Echevaria, the building's owner, refused to comment.

The family lived in a small, two-story apartment built onto the back of the building across from the Marina Village housing complex.

On Tuesday, a young boy stood bouncing a multicolored ball by the front steps. A young woman burst into tears when told of Holliday's death and ran into a first-floor apartment. When she emerged, dabbing her eyes with the hand, she refused to give her name and said no one in the building wanted to talk about the fire.

The rear section of the building, where the Hollidays had lived, was a charred hulk, held together with odd sizes of particleboard. But the white-and-brown front part of the house, with two large porches, appeared untouched by the fire.

Javis Holliday grew up in Hartford. His wife died in 1999, and when his own health deteriorated, he moved in with his daughter and granddaughter.

Javis Holliday is survived by two sons, Javis Holliday Jr. and Dean Holliday, and four nephews and two nieces, all of Bridgeport.

Funeral arrangements for Javis Holliday Sr. were not available Tuesday.
