The town awarded Industrial Wrecking Inc. of Bridgeport a $222,450 contract this week to demolish the police department's administration building, making way for a new public safety complex.
Seven firms bid to raze the 20,000-square-foot building, town Building Superintendent Alan Monelli said. Five of them came in under $290,000, and one bid was for $692,000.
Construction of a 67,400-square-foot police station and 177-space parking garage is scheduled to begin in August, Monelli said.
Town public works personnel have moved most of the police department's administration across the street to vacant offices in the Central Fire Station, a move they hope to complete by May, according to Monelli.
Monelli said the police department's records division, where the public can obtain accident reports, will be moved last, and will be located on the second floor of the Central Fire Station.
Industrial Wrecking Inc. officials were not available for comment.
Separate work on a $4 million contract to relocate sewer and electric utilities for the new complex is scheduled to begin by April 1, Monelli said.
The current administration building is obsolete and run down, officials have said, without adequate operating space for officers, as well as necessities like evidence storage, prisoner processing, and training.
The new complex will eventually house the police, fire, and emergency medical services' administrations, according to officials, and will include a glass-and-metal public atrium and a second-story footbridge linking a parking garage to the renovated central fire station.
To accommodate construction, fire department administrators have been relocated to new leased offices at 75 Holly Hill Lane.
