It was a festive and bittersweet scene tonight as Fire Marshal Fred Baker bid farewell to Westport.
Baker, who served on the Westport Fire Department for more than 27 years, retired from his career in Westport last month to take a similar position in New Canaan.
New Canaan is lucky to have someone with motivation, said Fire Inspector Nate Gibbons. Theyre getting someone with more than a badge. Theyre getting someone involved in the community.
Baker began his career as a firefighter in Westport in 1978, when he was 22 years old. He joined the department the same day as a number of other longtime firefighters, including Chief Christopher Ackley, who was unable to attend tonights reception.
To celebrate his dedication to Westport, his retirement party was held at the Peppermill Restaruant on Post Road East. During the ceremony, Baker received three plaques commemorating his service to the town.
First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said it is with sadness that they say farewell.
Its Westports loss, said Joseloff. He leaves behind a legacy others will only try to emulate.
State Senator Judi Friedman said although she was sad to see him leave Westport, she will still be able to see him in New Canaan.
Also saying goodbye was Rebecca Loeser, 14, and her family. Baker rescued Loeser, now a Coleytown Middle School eighth grader, from her burning Bonnie Brook Road home on July 19, 1994. She was 2 years old at the time.
Ronald Loeser, Rebeccas father, said he was surprised to learn his daughters rescue was the first in Westport since 1962. He said he was very grateful that Baker, who was not supposed to be on duty that day, was one of the first on the scene.
Baker entered the Loeser home without a fire hose in search of the child trapped inside. According to Loeser, when Baker had taken her from the building, her lungs were filled 40 percent with carbon monoxide.
In response, Baker said he was very appreciative for everything Westport has done for him.
So many people helped along the way, said Baker. The men and women of this department are second to none.
