BRIDGEPORT - On the same day police fatally shot a man outside the Marina Village public housing complex, an apparent arson occurred at an apartment there late Thursday.

No one was inside at the time and fire officials were searching for the occupant.

It was not immediately clear if the fire was related to the events leading up to the shooting.

The fire was reported at 11:13 p.m. in apartment 305 of building 15.

"It looks to be incendiary," said acting Fire Battalion Chief Dominick Carfi.

"It looks like we have an accelerant" that was ignited.

Firefighters extinguished the flames in minutes, Carfi said.

The apartment's first floor sustained moderate fire damage and the second floor sustained smoke damage, Carfi said.

Arson investigators and police detectives were called in, and the area was taped off.

Dozens of people gathered on their front porches to watch the scene.

Meanwhile, a baseball bat-wielding woman whose front door was blocked by police tape tried to get by detectives to enter her apartment.

They seized the bat and restrained her without arresting her. She talked loudly to bystanders for several minutes afterward.
