| BRIDGEPORT The city's Fire Department has three new vehicles for land and sea. A new 14-foot inflatable boat that can carry up to six people has been purchased for $6,000, replacing a 15-year-old vessel that was beyond repair, provisional Fire Chief Brian Rooney said. The funds for the boat came from the department's operating budget, according to Rooney. The boat was made by Defender Industries Inc. of Waterford. While the craft is being outfitted, the department will use an aluminum boat. Meanwhile, two utility vans donated by the Aquarion Water Co. will hit the road once they have been painted red, Rooney said. One is for the Arson Squad and the other will carry equipment for responding to hazardous material calls. "We're very pleased," the chief said. He added that he is applying for a grant for a fireboat equipped with a water pump. If the grant is approved, it would be the first such boat for the department. Rooney said he expects a decision on the grant application during the summer. He also hopes next to acquire new cars to replace 10 aging vehicles in the department's 17-car fleet.
