| Firefighters To Train This Weekend On Simulated Hazardous Leak Published on 3/11/2005 Groton The Groton Fire Officers' Association, in partnership with Tilcon Connecticut Inc. and Providence Worcester Railroad, will train this weekend on a simulated rail tank car leaking a hazardous material. The association will hold safety classes today and Saturday and then conduct a drill from 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday at the Tilcon plant on 185 South Road. About 150 firefighters and emergency personnel from New London County will attend the Safety Train program over the three-day period. The Safety Train is a traveling classroom educating firefighters, railroad personnel and other emergency responders across the country on how to deal with railroad emergencies. Anthony Manfredi Jr., training officer for the Groton Fire Officers' Association, organized the training, which will begin Friday evening in the classroom car, a fully equipped training room fashioned from a former insulated boxcar that carried beer. The training will end Sunday when the P&W Railroad will pull the Safety Train from Massachusetts to Tilcon in Groton, where emergency workers have to deal with a rail tank car leaking the hazardous material. © The Day Publishing Co., 2005 |
