| BRIDGEPORT - The cause of death for three Bridgeport residents killed Friday night in a Colorado Avenue house fire was asphyxiation, officials said. Taniecha Sophia Blackwood, 27, and her children, 5-year-old Elijah Boyd and 4-month-old Dwayne Dennis Jr., were killed by asphyxia due to smoke inhalation, a spokesperson for the Connecticut Medical Examiner's Office said Sunday. But the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Bruce Elander, Bridgeport assistant fire chief, said Sunday. No decisions have been made at this point, he said. The scene is still being treated as a possible crime scene. The fire broke out at about 10:30 p.m., and quickly consumed the first floor of the building, where the victims lived. The second floor was under renovation and uninhabited. One resident, a tenant on the third floor of the multi-family residence, escaped injury. Members of the state Fire Marshal's Office, who could not be reached for comment Sunday, were assisting local fire and police officials with the investigation. Based on what our investigators tell me, the fire does not appear to [have been] caused by any criminal act, such as arson, Sgt. Scott Llewellyn, an investigator with the state Fire Marshal's Office, said Saturday. Any further determination will be based on autopsy results, he said. Blackwell's body and those of her two young children were in the custody of the Connecticut Medical Examiner's Office Sunday. Delrissa Brown, Blackwood's aunt, said Sunday that her family has not yet finalized plans for a funeral. Frank Washkuch Jr., who covers regional news, can be reached at 330-6287. |
