Brymer Allowed to ResignPublished on 12/23/2004 CLINTON - Corporal John Brymer III, 38, former 16-year veteran of the Clinton police department, has been allowed to tender his resignation to the town, following a sex scandal that rocked both Clinton's police and fire departments. In addition to his police duties, Brymer served as deputy chief of emergency medical services, and head of the junior firefighter's division, of the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department. This agreement culminates a two-year grueling process in which charges were brought against the officer in connection with his sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female junior firefighter. The married father of two was charged, in part, with three counts of conduct unbecoming an officer and related charges of engaging in an extra-marital affair; lying to investigators; misusing a patrol vehicle to drive the girl home; communicating with her by phone and email while on duty; and influencing or coaching two male junior firefighters to lie about his involvement with the girl as the investigation was unraveling. In addition, Brymer was charged with violating a direct order as a result of an incident in which he had contact with the girl during the time period that he was ordered by Chief of Police Joseph Faughnan to avoid all contact with her. He was also charged with providing false and/or incomplete information during the investigation. In this new agreement, Brymer shall not be allowed to seek employment with the town and cannot pursue any litigation regarding this case. In a statement to the (IT)Harbor News, Chief Faughnan said, "In the best interests of the town and the police department, we have come to a settlement and have agreed to allow Corporal John Brymer to tender his resignation. He may not file any lawsuits regarding this matter, nor can he be reinstated on the force, or work for the town of Clinton in any manner. We wish him the best in his future endeavors." In the agreement, Brymer will receive his police pension and will be reimbursed for payments he incurred for health insurance. The agreement stipulates that his termination notice will be removed from his personnel file. It also outlines the manner in which future references for employment shall be communicated.
