Doubts about fire exams only raised after results in

Letter to the Editor 07/07/2004
As a retired fire inspector with the New Haven Fire Department, I feel compelled to write regarding the recent promotional test scores for lieutenant and captain.

Prior to the scores being posted, not one black firefighter made any remarks regarding the test. If they had any doubts about tests, they should have voiced their opinion at that time. Only after they did not make the top 15 did they decide to protest.

Promotional tests are given to determine who are the best candidates to fill the ranks.

In the past several years, blacks have been promoted to chief, assistant chief, drillmaster and other positions by passing white captains, battalion chiefs, and deputy chiefs. Not one white officer made any protest.

It seems that the Firebirds are ignoring the fact that two Hispanics were in the top 15, or do they deny that Hispanics are so-called minorities?
