NEW HAVEN — A decision about who will be the city’s next fire chief is expected before the end of the month, city officials said.
This week, the selection committee finished two days of interviews with the applicants. Karen DuBois-Walton, the city’s chief administrative officer, said the panel would meet Tuesday and narrow the field.

She said the group will recommend three people to Mayor John DeStefano Jr., who is expected to meet individually with the finalists.

As the chief is an appointed position, the final choice for the job rests exclusively with DeStefano.

The committee interviewed all nine candidates in City Hall on Tuesday and Wednesday and was "very impressed with the folks that we talked to," DuBois-Walton said.

The CAO said officials were confident that a decision would be made before the end of January.

At the soonest, it would appear a decision could be made by the end of next week.

City aldermen and other politicos already were pushing hard for their favored candidates, City Hall insiders said.

Former Fire Chief Dennis W. Daniels retired from the department Jan. 1.

The nine applicants for the job were:

Assistant fire chiefs Michael Grant and Ron Dumas; battalion chiefs Anthony Calloway and Vincent Landisio; lieutenants Andrew Campion, Abraham Colon and Richard Rowe; retired Lieutenant Robert Whelan and retired Assistant Chief Allyn Wright.

The six-member search committee includes DuBois-Walton, current and former fire commissioners, and a retired fire chief.
