Maglione was sworn in to a second five-year term as fire chief. About 50 fellow firefighters, family members and friends attended the festivities featuring the singing of the national anthem by Fire Lt. Ina Anderson and a performance by the Connecticut Pipe & Drums Corps. Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner, Stratford Fire Chief Ronald Nattrass and Milford Fire Chief Louis LaVecchia were among the dignitaries. "It's a proud day for Maglione, his family and the Bridgeport community," said Mayor Joseph P. Ganim. "It's been a pleasure having him as chief for five years and we're looking forward to another five years." Ganim, who appointed Maglione as chief in June 1997, said the City Charter limits Maglione's service to two five-year terms. During his time as chief, Maglione has led a fire safety campaign. He has emphasized installation of smoke alarms and fire detection devices in apartments and homes to prevent death and injury and reduce property damage. "I would not be here today without the support of the dedicated men and women firefighters of the city of Bridgeport," he said. "They give more than they take in service to others. They know the value of human life." The fire chief said firefighting has come a long way since Benjamin Franklin introduced the concept in the 18th century. However, he said the one thing that has remained the same are the people in need of help. Maglione's mother, Alice, and his father, Alfred Maglione who will turn 90 on Independence Day attended the gathering. Alfred Maglione said he was very proud to celebrate his son's successful career as Bridgeport's fire chief. Chief Maglione, 54, has now served 31 years in the Bridgeport Fire Department. He rose through the ranks since his appointment as a firefighter on May 20, 1971. He became a pumper engineer in 1974, a lieutenant in 1988 and a captain in 1990. He became an assistant chief in 1995. Maglione was appointed fire chief following a nationwide search. He and his wife, Jacqueline, have five children and live in Bridgeport. Joel C.
